People say Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings in order to be sensitive to the feelings of others who may not celebrate their own holiday. Isn’t this wrong? Shouldn’t we be encouraging religious tolerance? How can someone be offended by a gesture of goodwill? Being an atheist I don’t celebrate any religious holiday so I’m not offended if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah or Diwali or whatever religious occasion that someone else chooses to acknowledge. But if I were religious, should I not be tolerant of those wishing me happiness anyway, even if those beliefs are not in line with my own?
People should appreciate that others may celebrate another holiday and even feel special that they have chosen to share it with them - accepting that in some areas/countries, they’ll hear a lot more about a particular celebration than another. I’m not asking why people behave like this since I do not expect rational thought from religious people, but I do expect it from a developed society. I.e. A country should encourage religious tolerance and not be afraid of celebrating one’s personal holidays and sharing it with others. Doesn’t that make sense?
It seems very closed-minded of people to take offence at the mention of a different belief’s holiday. The politically correct approach should be to include everyone in the celebration of religious festivals - with the exception of expecting people to join in religious ceremonies/prayers etc.
In summary, Happy Holidays!!
